Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I tell if I have a tile problem?

A: Some of the most obvious signs are hollow sounding tile, cracks in the grout and broken or cracking tile. In a tub or shower area look for bubbling paint around the perimeter of the tile, this can be a sign of water penetration.

Q: How do I insure a good installation?

A: Hire a professional, a licensed contractor, and ask for references.

Q: How do I determine what installation method to use?

A: Always ask your contractor to explain all your options of installation. Remember a mortar bed (sand-cement) installation is usually the best method but you will pay a little more.

Q: How do I know if I have a mold problem?

A: Mold is a result of water damage. It has a musty smell and you may see black staining along the joints between the tile and tub.

Q: How do I clean and maintain my tile?

A: To maintain your tile, clean your tile daily with a damp cloth or sponge and towel dry. At weekly or monthly intervals use a neutral cleaner, never use bottled liquid cleaners that may contain acids that will etch the tile glaze and grout.

Q: How do I choose an appropriate tile for the area of installation?

A: When looking for a selection, always explain in detail to your tile supplier, the area of the installation, the type of use the tile will receive and If the area is in a high traffic zone.

Q: Is a slip-sheet needed for all floor tile installations?

A: No, a slip sheet is not needed for all floor installations. It may be needed if you have hair line cracks in your slab but you should follow manufacture guidelines or discuss your options with your contractor.

Q: What are the advantages to sealing a tile installation?

A: Application of a sealer is not recommended for all areas. Discuss the area to be sealed with your tile supplier and contractor. If the area is suitable, a sealer will aid in keeping the grout from staining and/or discoloration.

Q: How do I fix the crack between my counter top and splash or tub and splash?

A: Completely scrape out the cracked grout from the joint, make sure the joint is completely clean and dry, then apply a good quality silicone caulking to match the grout around the tub. Fill up the tub with water before caulking.

Q: Does installation vary in different climates?

A: Yes, be aware of freeze/thaw conditions in selecting an installation.
